Seems like to be good at self-employment, you need to have self-respect and self-worth and it's really evident you have a lot!! Your assertiveness and discipline is actually inspiring!
Your advice and showing how you work as a freelancer is so interesting and really informative! I really appreciate how your videos are not just entertaining, but also informative and bringing value to us.
Seems it would be like working at a sandwich shop all day and going home to make sandwiches. LOL But then I'm a photographer who's hobby is also.... Photography. HA HA HA
This is such a cool video Harriet! I'm not planning on being a freelancer in the near future, but its soooooo inspiring and interesting to hear a BUSINESS WOMAN explain how she does it
Not an editor, but I am working toward my dream of writing and publishing a book--I totally get needing to create your own routines & boundaries. Thank you for sharing about your career experience!
This seems like a good set up to have from your process of editing and doing check ins to the boundaries you’ve got so you still get paid but you also don’t have to yell at anyone and having contracts so everyone knows what’s happening. I would try the job out myself but I don’t think I’d be cut out for it haha.
I'm in my last semester in uni in Nigeria and I am currently on this path! I have been able to secure 2 clients although I'm not paid that well but I'm paid good enough to live on as a student. After uni, I intend to work as a editor full time and this video really helps alot especially with the pricing! Thank you for this video!!
This was so helpful! Your editing timeline is goals 😭 My process is ao opposite and honestly probably why it takes me so long. I love that you've found a way to make it so quick!
It was so fun to see a day in your life, a bit of your workflow, and listening in on your advice. I've been a RUclips editor for some time now too and this video makes me feel less alone in our industry!
It isn't actually that hard if you learn and practice it. Me myself I am starting editor (2 years) and I have learned so much. I have my own RUclips channel but I like to edit someone's else's videos more nowdays. I actually got a new editing job from someone.
SUCH a great video. 1000% agree with how making content for yourself is a good place to start -- my RUclips channel led to nearly all of my freelance work and landed me a great full-time gig producing content for a popular brand. A powerful portfolio is EVERYTHING.
Great video! I always love learning more about what a career in content creation looks like for different people and just learning about others’ creative jobs and processes. Thanks for sharing, I’m studying graphic and I think there are definitely some things I can apply from this! Hope this video finds more creatives 😊
This was so inspiring! I've thought about having a career in editing but have felt overwhelmed by it all and always figured I'd need a degree to even get any credible work. Thanks for helping to shift my mindset :)
wow!! this is an amazing video Harriet! I’m a freelancer too, I do social media for small businesses and I really want to get into freelance editing as well. This video helped me a lot, you are extremely disciplined- which I really need to focus on being too🥺 thank youu for this video🧡
i promise you despite how it may look, i am not very disciplined hahaha. i try my best but just know if you're procrastinating etc you are definitely not alone
I loved learning a little about your processes as a freelance editor. 🥰 I've also been an editor for 6 years, but it's still very difficult for me to set these working hours, but I'm trying to improve 🙏
as an editor myself I can't ever find any RUclipsr with a similar job to mine, so happy to have come across this video and would love for you to make more content involving your work
This was so helpful for me! I love the video editing aspect of RUclips so much! When I first tried working with people, my first few clients pretty much everything for practically no money. It was very frustrating. I've also had trouble pricing myself in the past. After watching this, I'm tempted to try again :)
Thank you for this video. I have my own small channel & I always learn something new from your videos. Super appreciate the transparency and realness. 🩷
Very interesting girl! Relating to a lot of this as I have 100% self-taught myself how to edit my videos! I've been dabbling with editors lately and it's interesting to see an editors perspective, especially since I am obviously invested in my own channel editing for myself haha. From one Aussie to another, well done making doing what you love work!! 😁
you're actually an angel for this thank you so much for laying everything out in such a clear detailed way! i'm starting out and wasn't as conscious about contracts and rates etc this was a huuuuge help
This was not just a helpful video, but encouraging with how straightforward and possible it seems. I began my freelance career editing as a teenager and into my early twenties, then switched to freelance film set production work for a couple years. I edited a local promo just a couple weeks ago, and remembered how much I enjoyed it and how easy it came along-- but I have been in imposter syndrome with the idea of returning to that career (with how wild editing seems to be nowadays with retention / pacing techniques). But, like you said, it's all about putting the time into it and the practice. Showing your structure with a step by step process is really valuable, and I've got a list going of steps I will take going forward. I watched this fully and completely, and is on my list to watch again later. Thank you!
Thanks! The detail in this was so great! I definitely want to do exactly what you are doing in a few years. I love editing but don't love filming myself as much anymore, so I'm hoping to make the switch at some point 😊
Thank you so much for this video. Soooo many gems!! Do you by chance do coaching/mentoring? Not for learning how to edit, but getting the business operations in order. I just want to make sure that I'm setting myself up for success from the beginning...as much as possible because I know I won't have everything perfect.
I have to say I watched over a hundred videos about freelance editing but this video was the best I saw so far. It was highly informative and educative with a lot of interesting aspect of this field. I learned so much from it! Thank you very much! ☺
Excellent video! I hope this helps a lot of people on their journey to getting into the field of editing or even graphics design. One thing I might add through my experience is to get up and walk around every now and then. Get your blood flowing. It also helps you reset and look at the project with a fresh set of eyes. People get so locked-in on the edit, especially if they are new to the craft, that they tend to not see how much time has passed by. Sitting down for 8 hours makes you sore by the end of the day and you don't want to end a work day like that. Like you said, "I've been at that desk all day."
Thanks for posting this! We are considering the idea of hiring a video editor in the future and it was super informative to see how it all works on the editors end!! :D
It's great to see insights into the structured workflow of a freelance video editor! 💼 Setting schedules and organizing processes are key to success when working independently in creative fields like video editing.
The value in this video is insane!!! You are incredible! I am so multi passionate so I’m getting into freelancing and this was super informative. Would love to start pitching and get one retainer client!! Will be back for more🕺🏽
This is all very good information. Very well put together. Thank you! Would you mind sharing a template to your contract to see all the requiements and how you implemented the month to month retainer? I love this idea.
Great video Hannah. I think your clear and concise explanation of working with clients and contracts is gold for people new to working for themselves. I've been self employed for years and years and learned the hard way! I'm a green horn on YT and really appreciate seeing your work flow. Its very similar to the way I've broken down my own routine. Looking forward to watching more from you - Paul 😃😃😍😍😎😎
my contract with my podcast clients looks exactly the same. you going over your pricing really felt validating since I came up with the terms on my own and got a lot of push back from clients who had never experienced anything similar with other editors.
As a fellow editor I love to see this! Transparency about video editing is very rare. Also if anyone else has questions about editing I’ll be happy to answer as well.
I am so curious , how are you able to create such engaging content , be consistent on your own socials and be able to grow as a freelance editor ? Honestly this was a big motivator ❤
Resigned from my full time job as a video editor and motion designer, and started to edit for youtubers since August 2023, it's way better than the full time jobs I love it
loved watching this thank you for sharing more!! I'm in a post production (editing) program for film and tv and I've always thought about doing freelance RUclips editing when I'm done! :)
I started editing about 1.5 years ago, and now I help with editing for my boyfriend as a shadow worker, which I don't mind because I don't have to deal with clients, haha. But I'm just about to step up and start looking for my own clients. Your video is such an inspiration and so valuable! Thank you! 🥰
There’s not much more to say in terms of the retainer, if you have any questions feel free to ask but I explained it in this vid! In terms of the contract, I used a template I found on google and edited it to match my needs :)
I am doing content and editing my own videos and although is fun it is a massive skill that I definitely haven’t mastered and it’s so time consuming, hands down to you for doing this and having your own channel and editing your own videos too! 🙌
100% what she said! I've been doing freelance video editing for 20 years now in addition to also filming and it's been the best career ever for me. I love what I do, the freedom, the projects, the people I get to work with and meet... It's truly a dream come true. But yes - it's A LOT more work than more people realize. I'd go as far as compare it to being a lawyer or a doctor. It's one thing to learn the basics of a software and edit little 1 track youtube videos, but it's a totally different thing when you have 20+ video/audio tracks and it's all action packed - you need YEARS of training and practice for something like that.
This is awesome! Editing is such a big part of my workflow in content creation. So easy to cancel other plans if the edit can use more work 😅 I will apply your tips ❤
I've been trying to start working as a video editor freelancer for 3 years. I earned only 700 dollars during this time and eventually opened my RUclips channel and started making money on it But I still need a job(
@@scrivspo It was very difficult to find at least some orders for the first 1.5 years when you were new to the freelance platforms, so I was happy to have even small 10-20 dollar orders. But in recent year, with the problems with electricity in Ukraine due to the war, people are not very willing to give more serious work to Ukrainians on freelance. I understand them, of course, but it's still sad(
This video was great. I'm looking to leave my job & go into fulltime freelance video editing. I get major imposter syndrome, but this video has great tips to help with a lot of stuff. Gained a new sub :)
Great video and absolutely to the point. Being a RUclipsr and doing paid event filming and editing, I really appreciate the challenge of film editing. One small thing that challenges me is that my clients are very slow to return their feedback. By the time they do, I've already finished many more projects, and I really have trouble remembering the project that I have to revise. Since I only get paid when the project is finished, I have to wait for weeks before I get the feedback, can revise the project, and send the invoice.
This was a super interesting video! I just started my own RUclips channel (not this account) and I found editing so ‘challenging’ and fun at the same time 😆😆😆 Feel like I’m learning something new every video. Also nice to see another fellow Aussie RUclipsr here. Sending you love from Brissy ❤
I love this video so much, I learned a lot thank you :) I am a fellow editor myself, but I do editing retainers for Instagram Reels mainly, and I find a lot of clients will have videos go into the next month because they didn't get to it etc and I find it really difficult honestly to keep up with. This inspired me to maybe just have a structure that if i don't get assets, the videos don't roll over to the next month. Hmm..
Very good video. As an ex BBC + freelance editor of 30+ years you really have taught me a few business ideas (I’m terrible at self promotion and gaining clients!) thanks 👍
05:43 📝 Rough cuts are the initial stage of video editing where editors decide what to keep and discard, forming the framework of the video. It's about trimming the fluff, not creativity. 07:34 📚 Skill-building through online courses is crucial for aspiring editors. Resources like Skillshare offer classes led by industry professionals, aiding in mastering editing software. 10:02 🖥 Adding finer details like zooms, sound effects, and titles is where the creative aspect of editing shines. It's where an editor's skills truly manifest, making the content engaging. 12:12 📧 Pitching to clients requires creativity and personalized approach rather than generic proposals. Building a portfolio, proactive networking, and showcasing skills are key. 16:00 💰 Pricing strategies for freelance editors vary, including hourly rates, per-video pricing, and monthly retainers. Monthly retainers ensure consistent income, offering stability amidst client fluctuations.
Omg this was sooo interesting to watch! I’m also a freelancer (classical musician AND RUclipsr) and I have been thinking of starting to do editing for other RUclipsrs. You really inspired me right now. Also…I already mentioned that in my comment on your latest video…I’m also Melbourne based and would absolutely love to go for a coffee some time! ❤
…also I’ve got a main channel which is monetised, this one is just my fun channel (feeling imposter syndrome now 🫣😅) my main channel is NonStopTravelVV
Seems like to be good at self-employment, you need to have self-respect and self-worth and it's really evident you have a lot!! Your assertiveness and discipline is actually inspiring!
Awww this is so sweet! You definitely have to back yourself when you’re self employed, otherwise you’ll get walked all over lol
@scrivspo it's hard to be assertive but definitely harder to not be able to pay rent lol. Good on you Harriet!
This comment has inspired me ❤
💜
You are absolutely not WRONG about that. Where MANY people fail at being self-employed is discipline.
I love this video! I’m a full time software engineer but am fascinated what other careers look like. Thank you for sharing with others!
❤️❤️❤️
Full time data engineer checking in! Agreed, I’m such a snoop and so intrigued by everyone’s careers!
Thank you Harriet for sharing your life with us!
Looking to move into software engineer, why are you looking to get out?
@@amoledor I'm not looking to get out.
Your advice and showing how you work as a freelancer is so interesting and really informative! I really appreciate how your videos are not just entertaining, but also informative and bringing value to us.
aww this is so sweet, i'm so glad you enjoyed!
its impressive how you can edit for other people while still doing your own channel with 43k subs! im IMPRESSED!
Seriously!! 😅
Aw thank you!! I just treat myself like another client lol 😂😂
Seems it would be like working at a sandwich shop all day and going home to make sandwiches. LOL But then I'm a photographer who's hobby is also.... Photography. HA HA HA
@@scrivspo That's very good advice as well!
my job is far away from yours. i know nothing about editing. but harriet has a new video - i click.
Same!
what would i do without you guys!?!
This is such a cool video Harriet! I'm not planning on being a freelancer in the near future, but its soooooo inspiring and interesting to hear a BUSINESS WOMAN explain how she does it
and also........man I wish the US had universal healthcare lol
Omg I wish the US had universal healthcare too 😭😭😭 I feel so bad for you guys
this is a great video and thank you so much for being honest about how it took 2 years to find that first job
Of course ❤️❤️❤️

This seems like a good set up to have from your process of editing and doing check ins to the boundaries you’ve got so you still get paid but you also don’t have to yell at anyone and having contracts so everyone knows what’s happening. This makes me so happy!! It can be pretty lonely sometimes hey!
It's not really boundaries, it's a subscription for editing. It makes total sense.

I understand them, of course, but it's still sad(
Loved your breakdown. When you said - you pay for my time, not my services. WHEW!
So happy you enjoyed it!!!
Thanks for the detailed info on what you do! One day I might need some help! 😁
So happy you liked it!
This video was great. I'm looking to leave my job & go into fulltime freelance video editing. I get major imposter syndrome, but this video has great tips to help with a lot of stuff. Gained a new sub :)
You’ve got this 👏🏼👏🏼
This video is so good!!! Thank you for sharing
So happy you enjoyed!!!
I wonder if you could start charging a 50% deposit, so that you can receive some money up front and the rest when the project is delivered
Great info! I am looking into getting an editor soon, I know it would be so helpful and save me so much time. 🙌🏻
It really does!! And it helps you make more money in the long run as you can focus on creating more content. It’s the best investment ever!!
This was a super interesting video!
I just started my own RUclips channel (not this account) and I found editing so ‘challenging’ and fun at the same time 😆😆😆
Feel like I’m learning something new every video. Also nice to see another fellow Aussie RUclipsr here.
Sending you love from Brissy ❤
Sending love back to brissy! Glad you enjoyed this video ❤️❤️❤️
Hmm..
Yep!! Get them on a retainer 👏🏼 it’s not your fault if they’re falling behind!
Thank you for such an informative video
So happy you are enjoying learning!! It’s such a fun job!
Oh I’m tuned innn! I’m my own editor & can barley make ittt 😭
You’ve got this!!
I edited my video pending from last 5 days by watching your video! Thank you for the motivation 😃
Yay ❤️❤️
This is immensely helpful information. Thank you.
So happy you enjoyed!!
Very interessting and helpful! Thank you 😊
You’re welcome!!
Very good video. As an ex BBC + freelance editor of 30+ years you really have taught me a few business ideas (I’m terrible at self promotion and gaining clients!) thanks 👍
Wow amazing!! You’ve got this 👏🏼
05:43 📝 Rough cuts are the initial stage of video editing where editors decide what to keep and discard, forming the framework of the video.
You’re the best!
Thank you so much! Super helpful ♥
Yay glad I could help!
So so happy you enjoyed ❤️❤️❤️
This video was really good! Loved the passion :D
Yay!!
Great video ! Love it! Seems like your very professional 🙏
Aw thank you!!
OMG it takes me DAYS to edit a whole video. Mad skills to get it all done in a few hours 🥲🥲
Aw definitely don’t compare yourself, it depends on the video & I’ve also done this for years so I’ve developed shortcuts!!
